Moments after Soucy drilled McDavid with the cross check to the face, Zach Hyman came to his defence and caught Nikita Zadorov up high with a cross check of his own. Today, Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said he asked the NHL to review Hyman's cross check for a suspension too.
Tocchet didn't directly call for suspension, but noted that he thought Player Safety should've taken a look at it. Frankly, Tocchet is right, and this should have seen the attention of Player Safety.
Zadorov needing stitches on his face to repair a laceration, definitely proves it was a vicious cross check from Hyman. It's very surprising that Hyman got away without a suspension, or even a fine for this play, but at the end of the day, it's the warranted response when a team's superstar takes a dirty hit.
Hyman likely won't see any supplemental discipline coming from the NHL, as they've already made the decision to fine Zadorov $5K, and suspend Carson Soucy for one game. While they may have missed on Zach Hyman, this is absolutely the right call - but Soucy's suspension could've been longer.
With this play coming right at the end of the game, it seems both teams have something to go into next game seeking revenge for. Game 4 in Edmonton tomorrow night will likely be an extremely heated matchup, and will be must watch TV for any hockey fan.
