Alex Formenton, a former player of the Ottawa Senators who was charged in connection room to the 2018 Canadian World Juniors Scandal, is suing his agent according to new reports.

TSN's Rick Westhead reported today that Formenton is suing his agency, Newport Sports, for $20.5M. Formenton is lobbying allegations of negligence, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty. Formenton believes Newport Sports' actions blocked him from potential earnings in the NHL. Formenton's contract with Newport Sports ended in 2022.

Around that time, rumours of the World Junior case indictments began public, and Formenton left to play overseas. The season before, Formenton had scored 18 goals and 32 points in 78 games with the Senators. Formenton's lawsuit alleges that Newport had assured him there was «business as usual» with the Senators, who ultimately did not offer him a contract. Two years later while playing in the Swiss Pro League, Formenton was charged in relation to the 2018 World Juniors Scandal.

Honestly, this reeks of a desperate last minute attempt at a cash grab for a player whose NHL career is very likely over. Formenton may have some legal grounds to sue, but the Senators or any other team were not at all obligated to offer him a contract, especially if there were private concerns about pending charges. Formenton now has returned home to Barrie, Ontario to begin a new career in construction.

As of now, an eight-week trial in front of a judge and jury is scheduled to begin on September 8th, 2025, but it's possible that date gets moved up into the spring of 2025. Hockey fans across Canada will closely be following that trial, hoping the courts reach justice.
