Tikkanen is being charged with tax fraud in his home country of Finland. Last year, Tikkanen had $168,000 Euros worth of property repossessed by Finnish authorities, but that decision has since been overturned. Currently, Tikkanen has not appeared before a court on these charges yet.
Tikkanen is auctioning off four of his five Stanley Cup rings online, and keeping the first that he won with the Oilers in 1985. That means Tikkanen will be selling his Cup rings from Oilers victories in 1987, 1988, and 1990. The last cup ring Tikkanen is selling is from his victory with the New York Rangers in 1994. Along with his Stanley Cup Rings, Tikkanen is selling off some of his personal jerseys and team jackets.
Currently, his Cup ring with the New York Rangers has the highest bid at nearly $21,000. The highest bid for an Oilers cup ring was the 1988 ring, currently at $8,050.
It's real tough to see a person go through the wringer financially and have to sell such valuable personal items, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Tikkanen denied that the auction has anything to do with the tax fraud investigation, but it undoubtedly looks like he's suffering financially regardless. Hopefully Tikkanen can pull himself out of this and make himself whole.
