The Edmonton Oilers have every reason to go all-in at the trade deadline in pursuit of a Stanley Cup, and one option may be former Blackhawks star Patrick Kane.

Oilers GM Stan Bowman has a long history with Kane from their time with the Chicago Blackhawks, which has also led to Jonathan Toews being linked to Edmonton too.

Could the Edmonton Oilers pursue Patrick Kane in trade or free agency?

Oilers analyst Allan Mitchell laid out the case for Edmonton to pursue Patrick Kane in a trade this season, if the team decides they need to upgrade their top six forward group.

Kane could be a major lift alongside McDavid or with Draisaitl down the stretch Bowman may want to make a call if the organization feels the current group of veterans doesn't provide enough satisfactory options for the skill lines.

There's obvious concerns for the Edmonton Oilers - already one of the league's oldest teams - adding another 36 year old slow forward. However, elite skill can always find a way to work together.

At 5 on 5, Patrick Kane is still producing surprisingly decent results on the Red Wings, playing in a sniper role and getting available to fire pucks in the net. That could work alongside Leon Draisaitl, who has never really had a successful shooter on his wing.

Patrick Kane could really make the Oilers power play a force to be reckoned with. His offensive IQ and talents paired with McDavid and Draisaitl on the man advantage with be lethal. In 45 games this year, Kane has 12 goals and 31 points - still great production for his age.

Of course, the Detroit Red Wings would have to fall out of playoff contention and Kane would have to waive his no-trade clause to go to Edmonton.

Players reportedly can't resist the opportunity to play with McDavid and compete for a cup in Edmonton, so maybe that won't be a problem.

The point could be moot. Detroit might make the playoffs. Even if the Red Wings miss, there's no guarantee Kane would waive his no-trade clause for Edmonton or any other team.

Kane is a free agent again after this season, and while he's carved out a nice role for himself in Detroit, he may want to chase a Stanley Cup in his final years in the NHL. If Bowman doesn't land him in trade, Kane could even potentially sign in Edmonton as a free agent this offseason.

Adding Patrick Kane would be an incredibly exciting addition to the Oilers, but it still may not be what they actually need to address their biggest weakness. Goaltending is still their main problem, and will always be a concern until it's actually addressed.
