32 Thoughts and Sportsnet podcaster Elliotte Friedman dropped some major news that the NHL may look at Edmonton Oilers heading to Germany as a possible location for European games.
During their latest pod,Friedman spoke out about the possibility that the NHL would expand it's footprint into Europe especially Germany as one of the best players in the world, Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl came from there.
»Possibly more international hockey; the league would really like to expand its footprint I could also see more concentration on Germany, as one of the league's best players happens to be from there.» - Elliotte Friedman
Draisaitl has been a big spokesman for more international hockey to be hosted in his home countryas he feels the country and people would be great hosts and welcome the NHL with open arms.
Draisaitl has also been a role model for many young players as Germany continues to build interest in the sport.
«Well, first of all, I would like to go back. I'll throw that out there to the NHL,» Draisaitl said with a laugh. «But, no, it's amazing. Germany has really come along, and we've really created some really high-end product and some really high-end players in the NHL. It's amazing for the league to recognize that and give Germany a great game and a great event.- Leon Draisaitl
The NHL went to Germany back in September when Munich hosted the Buffalo Sabres to finish their training camp and had an exhibition game against Deutsche Eishockey Liga as they opened their new arena known as the SAP Garden.
As more countries become well in tune with hockey, the NHL will likely look at their country as a possible landing spot for games. The league has made it part of their expansion to be seen around the world and make people connect to it.
It likely that Germany will get their turn sooner than later to show the hockey world their hospitality again.
