Friedman stated that one coach had an idea that if a goal was under review and that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman only wants goals that are blatantly wrong disallowed that a time limit needs to be in place for the officials to make their decision which will help speed up the game.
This idea would certainly have implications in terms of potential calls that would likely be considered wrong even though it would fall under the new time limit. Over the past couple of seasons, goals being overturned have gone up and even with all the cameras watching the games, calls are still missed.
These discussions were likely mentioned as the NHL Board of Governors concluded their two-day conference that was health in Palm Beach FL earlier this week. No decisions were made however it's likely that discussion will continue into March when the general managers reconvene.
The NHL is always willing to tinker with the rules of their game to create a better experience for the fan base, enhance the speed and make sure that the calls are correct.
As Friedman stated, it's not a perfect system and will likely need more work but this idea of working on video review and a time limit will certainly be looked at further.
