Just a few days ago, the Los Angeles Kings traded Pierre-Luc Dubois and his mistake of a contract to the Washington Capitals for Darcy Kuemper, and it may have been because of the Oilers Cup Final comeback.

The Kings were seriously discussion buying out Pierre Luc-Dubois' contract, because teams can pay a reduced price on a buyout before a player turns 26. Dubois turns 26 in just a few days, and the Oilers comeback may have pushed the deadline a little close for the Kings.

Now that the Oilers/Panthers series is going longer, the margins are getting slimmer. A Florida win in Game 6 would've justbarely allowed the Kings to execute a cheap Dubois buyout. Game 7? No dice.

The Kings had to do anything to get out of paying the entire contract to Pierre-Luc Dubois, and making this trade was a great way for them to do so. After signing an 8 year contract for $8.5M annually, Dubois seemed to almost give up on playing hockey. His play dropped off a cliff, and he wasn't producing offensively near expectations. In 82 games with the Kings, he only scored 16 goals and 40 points.

The Capitals are taking an extreme risk acquiring Dubois, but it could turn out well for them if he treats this as a wake up call and improves his play. The Capitals are hoping they can get the best version of Dubois, who has the potential to be an elite two way center - one of the most lauded assets in hockey.

It'll be interesting to watch the Capitals and Dubois next year. If he can't pick up his play quickly, soon Dubois will have developed a horrific reputation around the NHL for signing a massive contract and coasting afterwards.
