The Oilers placed Dermott on waivers yesterday, after acquiring his apparent replacement in Alec Regula.
Today, Elliotte Friedman revealed that instead of joining the Oilers AHL team, Dermott will be heading to the first place Minnesota Wild instead.
Although the Oilers did place him on waivers, losing Dermott on the organization will sting the team just a bit.
Travis Dermott was drafted in the second round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2015, and has played 339 career NHL games now with four different teams as a depth defenceman.
Things haven't gone too well for Dermott in Edmonton this season, unfortunately. He's been healthy scratched for the last 7 games, and when Dermott was in the lineup, Coach Paul Coffey was benching him.
In 10 games this season, Dermott scored 0 points and registered a -2 rating. He didn't do much to prove staying worth for the Oilers roster into the playoffs, and when a better option came up with Regula, the Oilers had to jump at the chance.
Still, the Oilers were clearly hoping that Dermott would be able to clear waivers. The Bakersfield Condors currently have only 1 left shot defenceman, so Dermott would serve a positional need and also improve the AHL team significantly.
Dermott was signed to a one year, two way contract for league minimum. He was fine depth on a good value contract, so there was a real risk he was going to be claimed on waivers.
Now, he'll be joining one of the NHL's best teams in the Minnesota Wild. All the best to Dermott in his next chance in the NHL. .
