According to the Daily Faceoff's Cory Wilkins, Smith only played eight times this past year with the Hurricanes and has only registered two points and is a plus one.
Smith also has seen several trips to the farm system with their AHL team the Chicago Wolves where he seemed to be more effective with three goals and seven assists for 10 points.
At the beginning of this season, Smith was also waived as he failed to make the roster out of training camp and was sent down to the Wolves.
This defenseman is likely to look for a new home and a change of scenery after being bumped around by the Hurricanes.
The 24-year-old defender was drafted in 2018 by the New Jersey Devils, in the first-round 17th overall. He has seen three teams in his career including the devils, Pittsburgh Penguins and now the Hurricanes.
Holding a cap hit of $775,000 for one year could be an attractive feature for the Oilers as general manager Stan Bowman continues to scour the league for defensive help.
The Oilers are currently evaluating their roster as the March trade deadline approaches and the team has signaled that they will be buyers.
The Oilers celebrated with Connor McDavid as he visited Erie last evening for his jersey retirement ceremony where he spoke about his time in Erie.
The team now will focus on their game this evening against the lowly Chicago Blackhawks as the Oilers are looking to bounce back from their 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The game will take place at 7:00 PM eastern and should be an interesting match up as both future face of the league Connor Bedard against current face of the league Connor McDavid will face off against one another yet again.
