Kylington was selected in the second round of the 2015 Draft by the Calgary Flames, and went on to play 201 games with team. In the 2021-22 season his game took a major leap forward and Kylington emerged as a talented puck moving defenceman, scoring 9 goals and 22 points in 73 games.
Then, Kylington missed the entirety of the 2022-23 season in the player assistance program. He has since returned, played a brief conditioning stint in the AHL, then played 33 games with mixed results towards the end of this season.
Kylington was reportedly hoping for a multi-year deal, and surely a higher salary than just over $1M from the Calgary Flames, but the offer never materialized. The Flames reportedly had concerns about committing to Kylington after he missed so much time, and it seems like every other team did too. Now, he'll have to prove himself in the NHL again on a one year deal.
At the end of the day, the Colorado Avalanche may benefit greatly from this signing. Kylington will be eager to prove his worth and his place in the NHL, and now on a contending team, may be able to have a career season this year.
