Sealed case of extremely rare hockey cards sells for jaw-dropping price
Around a month ago, some massive news in the hockey card collector's world was breaking all over the internet. Someone was cleaning their basement in Regina, Saskatchewan when they found the holy grail of hockey card collectors - a sealed case of O-Pee-Chee cards from Gretzky's 1979-80 rookie season. The case holds 16 boxes with 48 packs inside each one.
With the allure of a mint-condition Gretzky card being available in the case, the owner listed it online and has now officially sold the case for a whopping $3.72M.
A prime condition Gretzky rookie card graded by an authenticator has sold for a record price of $3.75M in 2021, and that sale was one of only two known prime condition Gretzky cards in the world.
According to estimates, there could be up to 27 Gretzky cards within the sold O-Pee-Chee case. However, there was also printing issues with this case, which means some may not be in prime condition. Some hockey card enthusiasts are even imploring that the case remains sealed, as the value will only keep increasing if it's still a mystery, and if opened, the value could be less than ideal.
Regardless, it's an incredible sight to see how passionate people can be about hockey card collecting. When it comes to the great one, fans are clearly still obsessed.
