Nhl.com has reported that nine current and former NHL players took part in the NHL broadcast training camp which was held on July 17th in New York City.

It's quite common that former players become broadcasters whether it's through colour commentary, insider information or a general breakdown of the games they're watching. This camp was an all day event which showed the players how to prepare for game preparation, studying common reporting learning how studio work operates and social media and podcasting,

TNT hosted this event and it was led by Kenny Albert and former NHLer Eddie Olczyk and Brian Boucher. Current NHL are Garnet Hathaway spoke about how he felt about the camp.

"The more years that I've been playing and knowing that inevitably I'm going to stop playing at some point, I don't think there's any problem with trying to figure out what interests me after hockey," Hathaway said. The 32-year-old signed a two-year, $4.8 million contract ($2.4 million average annual value) that begins with the 2025-26 season. "I think the big thing for me is, will it be in hockey or will it not be? So, this is an awesome opportunity to see what the other side is."

The other players who are involved Chris Wagner, Louis Domingue, DeVante Smith Pelly, Nate Thompson, Michael del Zotto, Darius Kasparaitis, Eric Johnson and Ryan Kesler.

"The biggest thing for me would be all the notes and research that goes into
this," Johnson said. "You talk to them and if they're doing a Dallas-Edmonton [game], they're watching that team's previous two games to get ready, to prep for that current game. They have years and years of notes and stats. To say they're professionals is probably an understatement."

It's safe to say that this experience for the players will help other players garner interest and may join them in hockey broadcasting after their careers are over. Many players want to stay in the NHL even though they have retired or were forced out due to injury.
