This is a deal that will reshape watching hockey in Canada. According to reports from NHL insider David Pagnotta, Sportsnet has sold the rights to Monday Night NHL games to Amazon.

»Multiple sources have confirmed that Amazon has retained the Canadian broadcast rights from Rogers to air Monday Night Hockey on their platform during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, the remaining two years of Rogers' current 12-year agreement.»

The logistics of the Amazon broadcast isn't yet known, but for at least the next two seasons, Amazon will find themselves dipping into the hockey broadcast market. It's part of a significant trend between the NHL and Amazon conducting business, as Amazon will also release a behind the scenes NHL show this October that follows stars from several teams.

It seems that towards the end of their mammoth broadcast deal with the NHL, Rogers and Sportsnet are trying to offload as much hockey content as they can. Pagnotta also reported that Bell and TSN could be in talks to re-acquire some rights to more regional and national games. Across the board, there will be several different mediums for watching hockey in Canada soon.

Frankly, this is a welcome change from many fans. The Sportsnet broadcast has become old, tired, and frankly boring relative to its competitors. The company hasn't succeeded much in part due to fans not flocking to the product, and it seems hockey fans have been heard. Hopefully the broadcasts in the coming years retain the best parts about the current team, but improve the overall experience significantly.
