Just four seasons ago, Alex Steen was still playing for the St. Louis Blues. Starting next season, he will now become their general manager.
Current General Manager Doug Armstrong has announced he will transition to the role of President of Hockey Operations over the next two seasons. Steen's retirement from playing is obviously official as he takes over the role of General Manager, while earning from Armstrong in the transition period.
Alexander Steen was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs back in 2002. He was traded to St. Louis in 2008 for Carlo Coliacovo and Lee Stempniak, and went on to play the rest of his career with the Blues, winning the Cup in 2019.
It's an incredible sight to see a team name pretty much a recent player as the team's general manager, and it speaks to how revered Steen was in St. Louis. Steen's leadership over more than a decade was a key element in their Cup win, and now they're looking to lean on that leadership and hockey IQ to drive the next era of the St. Louis Blues.
