According to CBC and multiple other news sources, The trial will go before a judge and jury beginning April 22, and is expected to last around 8 weeks in total before both parties rest. An Ontario judge rejected a later court date that began in September 2025, thankfully allowing the justice process to move faster.
The five accused players all made the NHL, but have since had their contracts expire and none were re-signed by their respective teams. The players are: Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Michael McLeod, and Alex Formenton. McLeod was given one more charge than any other player for aiding the offence.
Most players signed new contracts overseas to continue their playing careers while in the court process. Michael McLeod has since reportedly left his KHL team, and Alex Formenton is back in his hometown of Barrie, Ontario trying to work in construction.
The shock of these horrible allegations spread through the hockey world, but especially in Canada. Nearly the entire group of Hockey Canada executives, including the CEO, rightfully stepped down for their lack of action.
It's surely a positive that the judge has chosen to prioritize this case and begin the trial at an earlier date. It's been so long since the incident, and hopefully the victim finds peace when justice is found.
