Moments ago, the Vancouver Canucks announced that they've signed goaltender Arturs Silovs to a two year contract with an annual value of $850K.

The Canucks took significant steps this season with a run to the second round, all with Silovs stepping up when starter Thatcher Demko went down with injury. This playoffs, Silovs started more games than he did previously in the NHL at all.

In the playoffs Silovs kept the Canucks in games, but definitely wasn't a world beater - posting a .898 save percentage and 2.91 Goals Against Average. Still, the 23 year old Latvian showed great promise in being an actual NHL goaltender, and the Canucks are locking him up for great value if he can continue to develop.

The Canucks as a whole took a significant step to becoming a serious contender when Rick Tocchet took over the team. Their star players have taken steps to becoming more complete players, and management has made bold trades to make the team better. Surely, the Canucks will be back in the playoffs next year and for years to come - making the rivalry with the Oilers so much better.
