With the emergence of Philip Broberg as a regular NHL player on the horizon, the Oilers have still yet to offer him a contract extension. Rumours have been within the 4-4.25M range, although other teams may be able to swoop in and offer him more than the Oilers have the option of giving.
One team that would greatly benefit from outbidding the Oilers is the Flames, as Broberg seems like a perfect fit for their team and timeline. The Flames could really push Jeff Jackson's hand here into having to move some assets to retain Broberg.
If the Flames want to offer sheet Broberg from the Oilers at anywhere from 4.5-4.75M, either outcome could be great for them. Either the Oilers can't match and they end up only giving up a second round pick for a player who previously was a top 10 pick, or they force the Oilers to squeeze out all their money to keep Broberg on the team.
It makes sense why Broberg would be a perfect fit for the Flames too, as he's set to have a breakout season as a 24 year old next year. Broberg is a big two-way defender with a lot of skill, who can play either side. The Flames are trying to get younger as they start their rebuild, which Broberg would fit perfectly into.
Of course Broberg would first have to accept the offer from Calgary, which he may choose to not even do. Unless Calgary is able to offer him term as well, it's very unlikely that Broberg would accept a contract with the Flames for only a couple hundred thousand more. Broberg has expressed his interest in being an Oiler, and has an opportunity to play for the Stanley Cup favourites. Broberg would be a huge loss for the Oilers, so hoepfully Jeff Jackson can continue to make great moves and keep Broberg on for another push at the Cup.
