With the 19th overall pick, the Vegas Golden Knights selected forward Trevor Connelly from the USHL. Connelly has been accused of two public racist actions in the past.
Two years ago, Connelly posted a picture of a horrific anti-Semitic symbol in an online post. He quickly deleted the post and apologized saying he didn't understand how hurtful it was, but was removed from his minor hockey team for the action. He has since taken part in diversity training and community service, as well as mentorship from a rabbi.
In another occasion, Connelly was suspended for using a racial slur on the ice in 2021. However, Connelly denied the allegations, and the suspension was lifted.
Plenty of fans came online to cast their doubt on true change made by Connelly, and shame the Vegas Golden Knights for drafting a player with such a history.
NHL teams have selected players with personal concerns in their past in recent years, specifically Logan Mailloux with the Canadiens and Mitchell Miller by the Coyotes. There's no official disbarment from the NHL for Connelly, so it was totally fair for the Golden Knights to draft him. However, if he gets to their dressing room, there are concerns about the fit and culture it would create.
