That raises the question, where can we find a solution? Is it possible that it is only 3 hours away, in the same province?
Calgary Flames are in the process of blowing everything up to rebuild in the very near future, so the Oilers could benefit from the move.
Due to Dustin Wolf's imminent move into the NHL, they may have to move one of their goalies. If that is the case, they could pursue Jacob Markstrom for his solid goalkeeping.
With a rebuild looming, would the Flames want to keep his $6 Million AAV contract? That wouldn't make sense to me.
'
He has two more years left on his contract and could be a short-term rental, and if they can extend him, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea.
Despite his 3-6-1 record and .905 save percentage, he ranked second in the league in goals saved above expected percentage (xgsa) at 10.21, suggesting the team in front of him is just bad.
Oilers would have to off-load quite a few assets to make this work, including Ken Holland selling Campbell to Craig Conroy. Since Campbell's AAV is so high, they'd likely have to attach a first-round pick in 2024 to move him.
They could also consider attaching Philip Broberg, as well, in order to sweeten the deal, and they could consider Warren Fogele or Ryan McLeod to make it work, as well as getting Chris Tanev for the buy-in along with Markstrom.
Despite being hardcore rivals, these two teams have a unique opportunity to help one another.
