Moments later, insider Pierre LeBrun confirmed the report that just pending a trade call, Tanev is headed to the Dallas Stars.
At 34 years old, Tanev was one of the most highly sought after defenceman available at the deadline this year. He's not known for his offensive production, but Tanev's hard nosed stay at home defensive style translates incredibly well in the playoffs, and contending teams were all over him. In Dallas, Tanev will solidify a blue line on a team destined for a long playoff run.
The Edmonton Oilers were one of the teams interested in Tanev up until today. In recent days, interest around Tanev increased greatly, and the price was driven up and was expected to be a first round draft pick to acquire Tanev. Clearly, the Oilers weren't willing to part with their first to land Tanev. At the time of writing, the return for Calgary in this trade is unknown.
UPDATE: To many's surprise, Tanev didn't fetch a first round draft pick. Instead, Dallas will be acquiring Tanev for a second round pick, Artem Grushnikov, and a conditional draft pick.
