Even though this season is less than three months old the team has undergone some extraordinary changes including a coaching change and inconsistent play.
But the goaltending continues to come up as the main concern for them. Tonight against the New York Islanders, the Oilers lost 3-1 but it's the statistics coming from Stuart Skinner that are shocking to say the least.
To let in three goals on 18 shots is just unacceptable and whether it's due to fatigue for playing too many games or poor defence, Skinner has to play better in order to stabilize this team so they can get back to their winning ways.
It almost seems unfair to Skinner to put all of this on his shoulders when general manager Ken Holland felt it was right to give Jack Campbell $5 million a season as he was expected to be the starter. It's clear he can't even get his career going in the AHL and has left the Oilers in quite a bind. The responsibility of this issue lays squarely on Holland, who despite clearly knowing the goaltending was a problem heading into this season, refused to make a move. At this point, it's measurable that it's costing the Oilers a playoff spot.
Unless Holland can come up with some kind of solution quickly and find a capable goaltender at a reasonable price then I expect a new general manager next season.
