Oilers' Woodcroft and Draisaitl Face Punishment in Loss to Canucks

Tensions flared in a game that continued the Edmonton Oilers' rough start to the season, with two significant incidents involving head coach Jay Woodcroft and forward Leon Draisaitl.

In the third period of Monday night's match against the Vancouver Canucks, as the Oilers trailed 4-2, Draisaitl received two roughing penalties and a 10-minute misconduct following a scrum.

Later in the period, coach Jay Woodcroft was slapped with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a game misconduct after a heated exchange with officials. Woodcroft had questioned a hit on Dylan Holloway during a power play, arguing it was similar to a previous penalty called against Connor McDavid.

woodcroft on his ejection.:

"i asked about the play on holloway, and you know, it wasn't profanity laced or anything. it was a quesiton, it wasn't well received when i asked the question, and in the end i got to be better. i can't take a penalty to put our team down. i didn't think it crossed the line at all, but it's sometimes the way you send a message, or ask a question, the way it's received might be not in the manner you intend it to. in the end, the reason i asked that question is i thought it was similar to the penalty mcdavid took to go down 4-3. i thought it was a fair question, he didn't. in the end, i got to be better. i can't ask that question apparently."

The Oilers are struggling out of the gate, with a 2-8-1 record, leaving them at the bottom of the NHL standings, just ahead of the winless San Jose Sharks.
