Ken Holland declined to trade for the defenseman, which was puzzling since it would have resolved one of the Oilers' problems.
Sam Lafferty, a fourth-line center, would have been traded for Vincent Desharnais.
By signing Sam Gagner multiple times rather than just sending Desharnais to get a fresh start, Holland created a void that Lafferty would've filled that Klim Kostin left open.
During his 36 games played last season, Desharnais has filled a need for the Oilers, but his limited sample size has coaches showing him some favoritism.
Despite the fact that Desharnais may be part of the Oilers' long-term plans and that the Center depth may be less precarious with Sam Gagner, Lafferty would've been a perfect replacement for Kostin at the moment.
