Moments ago, the Edmonton Oilers confirmed that Connor McDavid will not be able to return to tonight's game after suffering an injury moments into the first period.

McDavid was only able to play 37 seconds of ice time before being forced off the ice. On the first shift of the game, McDavid fell and slid along the ice awkwardly with his legs in the air. On his way back to the bench, McDavid was skating tenderly and seemed to be favouring his right leg.

Upon a close-up inspection of the play, McDavid jammed his left foot extremely hard into the boards at full speed. It didn't look like much at first, but that looks like it could be potentially disastrous for McDavid.

Edmonton losing Connor McDavid for any period of time is obviously a disaster situation, and it even seemed to play out in tonight's game. The rebuilding Columbus Blue Jackets were able to score 3 goals in the first period, and with the Oilers looking shaken up due to the injury to their captain, it feels like there's little hope that they can even come back in this game.

The rest of tonight's game won't even really matter, as the Oilers and their fans just want to get to the end of tonight and hear a potential diagnosis on McDavid's injury. It didn't seem like it could've been a significant problem, and it's a positive sign that he was able to skate off to the bench on his own volition.

The worst case scenario for Connor McDavid may be a re-aggravation of a reported abdominal injury that he had to end last year's playoffs. McDavid narrowly avoided surgery according to reports at the time. Hopefully that issue is fully healed, and this injury is just a minor problem.

After tonight's game, OilersDaily will have the latest updates on McDavid's condition as Knoblauch updates the public.
