What's complicating their contracts at the moment is the fact that the Oilers are $350K over the salary cap. However, according to a new report today from the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, the Oilers will finalize contracts for both players next week.
Both Holloway and Broberg are expected to sign for two years. Holloway's salary is expected to be $1.3M, while Broberg's will be $1.1M.
Holloway was drafted 14th overall by the Oilers in 2020, and really began to break through to the roster this season and especially in the playoffs. His offensive totals haven't reached expectations yet, but he had a number of memorable performances when it mattered the most. He'll surely be an NHL player and will only improve for the Oilers, hopefully using his speed, tenacity, and energy to make himself an asset in the lineup. $1.3M would be a more than fair contract.
Philip Broberg was drafted 8th overall by the Oilers in 2019, and similarly broke onto the Oilers roster in the playoffs this year. Broberg had a fantastic year in the AHL, scoring 38 points in 49 games, then fit seamlessly into the lineup in the third round of the playoffs. His puck moving skills and solid defensive play in the playoffs is giving the Oilers real hope that he could develop into a top four defender, and $1.1M would be a bargain for him.
Hopefully the Oilers do settle their final contract situations in the next coming weeks, and have their ideal lineup ready before training camp begins. This year's roster is stacked with high end veteran talent with a few young players trying to break through - an ideal construction for a team looking to go deep in the playoffs. If they can get both players signed to contracts similar to this reported value, it'll be fantastic contracts for the Oilers.
