Last night, the Edmonton Oilers announced their roster and schedule for their annual rookie development camp and Young Stars Classic Tournament in Penticton.

Rookie camp will open up tomorrow, with 25 total players reporting for medicals and quickly getting on the ice.

There's more than a few young players reporting to camp that Oilers fans should get excited for. The Oilers will get their first look at recent trade acquisition Matthew Savoie, the ninth overall pick from the 2022 Draft. The 20 year old forward shown serious offensive upside in junior, but hasn't fully made the jump to professional hockey yet. He played one game with the Buffalo Sabres last year, but may be a candidate to earn some call ups to the Oilers this year. Otherwise, now that he's aged out of Junior hockey, Savoie could join the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.

There's a few other top Oilers prospects in attendance too. Sam O'Reilly is the team's most recent first round draft pick from 2024, a pick that they traded to acquire showing their belief in O'Reilly's talent. Matvey Petrov is a 6th round pick from the Oilers in 2021, and has billed with serious offensive talent but struggled with minimal opportunities in the AHL last year. James Stefan, the son of first overall pick Patrik Stefan, was signed as an overage junior player and has shown incredible amounts of raw talent that needs to develop. Defencemen Beau Akey and Max Wanner are considered two of the Oilers top ten prospects, and will look to continue to improve their stock in camp. Oilers prospect expert Bruce Curlock is saying it's the deepest forward group he's seen in years.

The Oilers will open the Young Stars Classic with three games this weekend. On Friday September 13th the Oilers open against the Vancouver Canucks rookies, play Saturday against the Flames rookies, and close the tournament on Monday against the Jets. All games will be streamed on Oilers+.

The Rookie camp and tournament is always the first sign that hockey really is around the corner. With a few great prospects to go watch and a cup-contending team this season, it's an exciting time to be an Oilers fan again!
