Oilers management has had a turbulent last few day as the team lost in seven games in the Stanley Cup finals an now it appears that Ken Holland who is general manager of the team is set to part ways with the organization.
Campbell is currently in the middle of his five-year deal that was worth $25 million. This season has been nothing short of a disaster for Campbell as he lost his job to Stuart Skinner and then was kicked down to the minors to play with the Bakersfield Condors.
According to capfriendly.com if the Oilers chose to buy him out it would be based on $13.5 million remaining. A buyout would double the length of the contract which would become six years and the Oilers would have $1.5 million in cap space eaten up for the next six seasons.
Some fans have speculated that only San Jose would be able to acquire the whole of Campbell's contract, and the team needs a goalie too. If the Oilers attached a quality player like Ryan McLeod, perhaps the Sharks would eat all of Campbell's contract. The Oilers would get almost nothing in return.
It remains to be seen on what will happen, but with Jeff Jackson now the CEO and president of hockey operations, it's likely that Jack Campbell will remain with the Oilers if a trade cannot be done.
