According to Rupert McDonald of The Hockey Writers, there's a strong possibility that Oilers forward Evander Kane's days with the team may be numbered as a contractual change could see him on his way out of the organization.

News broke a few days ago that Kane has had knee surgery that will keep him out of the lineup for another 4 to 8 weeks. This set back is coupled with his other surgeries he had done in September on his abdominal muscles which has kept him out of the lineup the entire season.

Evander Kane's Contract Will Open Door for a Trade

Kane spoke on Zoom to reporters and thinks that this will only set him back by a week or two.

«I anticipate taking a week or two off from the norm of what I've been doing thus far, continuing it, then getting right back into it,» Kane told reporters via Zoom on Friday. «I don't think it's going to slow me down or my timeline down greatly with this surgery.» - Oilers forward Evander Kane

With the uncertainty surrounding his future and the constant setbacks with his health, the Oilers may seek an opportunity to move his salary as a contractual change is about to take place with his no movement clause becoming a modified no trade clause on March 1st.

It's worth noting that Kane's full no-movement clause expires on Feb. 28, and instead turns into a 16-team no-trade list. This means that Kane would have a say in where he goes but wouldn't be able to veto a deal with the 16 teams who aren't on his list. Don't be surprised to see the Oilers try and take advantage of that this coming offseason. - The Hockey Writers Rupert McDonald

This clause will have a 16-team list which will allow some movement for the Oilers especially if they have an offer for defensive upgrades.

"I'll be in a much better situation coming back this time, feeling 100 percent healthy & great shape, ready to rock." - Evander Kane

Oilers Need To Consider All Options prior to Trade Deadline

It's not a secret that general manager Stan Bowman has been working hard on the phones and with his staff to acquire a defenseman as the Oilers gear up for the second half of the season in hopes of another long playoff run.

According to Puckpedia Kane has one year remaining on his contract which holds a value of $5.125 million AAV.

Kane has not been the same since he had suffered his gruesome wrist injury which has prevented him from scoring goals and kept him out of the lineup for many months.

The Oilers remain optimistic that Kane will be able to return to the Oilers once he is fully healed, but it's in the best interest for the Oilers organization to look at all options and potentially dangle Kane in front of teams who may have an abundance of defensemen that they're willing to trade for.
