The Edmonton Oilers may face an investigation from the NHL if Evander Kane is unable to return until the playoffs, but insider Frank Seravalli believes the Oilers should be safe from anything being found.

The NHL does conduct independent check-ins on players to make sure teams aren't prolonging injuries for cap reasons, so they will check in on Evander Kane after his knee surgery.

NHL Insider Frank Seravalli believes Oilers Evander Kane will miss full regular season with legitimate injury

In a new interview with OilersNow, insider Frank Seravalli stressed that Kane's additional knee surgery will likely hold him out for the rest of the season.

Kane has a legitimate serious injury that should be safe from an NHL investigation, even though he could be on track to return for game one of the playoffs.

»«It gives the Oilers additional support to make any medical claim that they might need to do on the LTIR if anyone, including the league, were to challenge this.

And so moving forward, I would consider the Oilers operating on just one track and one track only, which would mean Kane isn't coming back until the playoffs.»

- Frank Seravalli

Evander Kane's knee surgery will set him back an additional 4-8 weeks in his recovery. He still hasn't started skating, or finished his off ice rehab for his abdominal surgery.

Among fan concerns that teams were abusing LTIR rules, the NHL made a statement last year that they would investigate all players with severe injuries.

»We have an independent, third-party physician review their medical records in detail, and in-person examinations where necessary.»

- Bill Daly

Evander Kane has a serious injury that very well could hold him out until the playoffs, giving the Oilers the chance to spend his $5.125M in salary at the trade deadline.

The Oilers surely miss Kane as a power forward in their lineup this season, but when they do get him back, it'll be like a trade deadline add itself. Hopefully he can return at full strength for Game 1.
