The Oilers were ranked the 7th most valuable NHL franchise today by a new report from Sportico. The Oilers are valued at a shocking $2.4B, a major increase from their value last of $1.59B.
Edmonton is clearly running away with their franchise value, especially when compared to their provincial rival Calgary Flames. The Flames are in the bottom half of the league, ranked 18th at half of the value of the Oilers. The major difference in valuation has to come from the Oilers success on the ice, their generational superstars, state of the art arena, and the hardcore fanbase that sells out every single game. On the other side, Calgary is a rebuilding team currently playing in a severely outdated rink.
One of the other, lesser popular ways the Oilers were able to increase their franchise value was with the controversial jersey advertisements. Earlier this week, the Oilers announced ads will now be on away jerseys as well as home jerseys.
The least valuable Canadian NHL team was ranked to be the Winnipeg Jets at $1.1B, worth a fraction more than the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Toronto Maple Leafs took the top spot at $3.66B, with the Montreal Canadiens third at $2.93B.
The Edmonton Oilers are climbing towards being in the top class of NHL powerhouse cities with their on-ice success and financial power. Not to mention, owner Daryl Katz will be a big fan of this news as he is laughing all the way to the bank.
