A former Oilers defenceman has earned a major and surprising promotion on his new team.

The Edmonton Oilers dealt veteran defenceman Cody Ceci and a third round draft pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Ty Emberson, mostly to save salary cap space. Cody Ceci played top four minutes on the Oilers and struggled, but on the San Jose Sharks, Cody Ceci will be asked to be their number one defenceman.

Ceci will be paired with 26 year old Mario Ferraro on the first pairing. It's not entirely surprising considering that the Sharks are a rebuilding team, but playing Cody Ceci on the first pairing may be a little tough. Ceci often made obvious positional mistakes in the defensive zone and frequently turned the puck over with poor passes and wildly inaccurate shots.

Ceci played from 2021-2024 for the Edmonton Oilers and had mild success, but definitely isn't a star. He played his career best year with the Oilers in 2021 scoring 28 points and having just a +8 rating.

The Sharks will likely showcase Ceci in big minutes throughout this season with the goal of trading him for future assets at the trade deadline. The 30 year old right shot defenceman is only being paid $3.25M for the next of this season, and that's salary and position will be a manageable asset for a contending team to acquire. If Ceci has a good season and proves he can contribute to a contending team, he'll defintely be moved at the deadline.

Oilers fans will still be wishing the best for Ceci in the next season. The Oilers themselves will be in the market for another top four defenceman, but you can pretty safely cross Cody Ceci off the list.
