The 23-year-old defenseman has been out for 12 games after he suffered a lower body injury against the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 2nd. This injury derailed a great start to his career in St Louis after he was signed to an offer sheet that the Edmonton Oilers did not match.
Since coming over to the Oilers, he played 12 games and had nine points which were two goals in seven assists along with six penalty minutes and was a + 6. Both Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway were signed to offer sheets by Armstrong late in the summer which the Oilers chose not to retain as it would cause too much disruption in their cap structure According to Oilers general manager Stan Bowman.
It's been widely discussed by the Oilers and the fan base on whether they should have at least kept Broberg during the offer sheet process. It was well known and documented that Broberg was not happy with how things went down with the Oilers as he continued to search for ice time an opportunity to show his skills.
Since their departure, the Oilers have not had a consistent season as the team continues to struggle in both ends of the rink and several of their players signed in the summer have not panned out including Jeff Skinner, Viktor Arvidsson and Adam Henrique.
It's safe to say that the organization run by Jeff Jackson will need to look deeper and discuss whether cutting both Broberg and Holloway loose was the right approach even though their numbers would have disrupted the cap to some extent.
Many have deemed the Oilers the oldest team in the NHL based on average years an it can be seen in many of the players as they have become slower on the ice.
Though still early in the season with 20 games under their belt, it's safe to say that Stan Bowman and his team will search the league for help as it's likely they will be active on the trade front by next March.
