Former Edmonton Oilers defenceman William Lagesson has been suspended for three games for a brutal choke-hold on his opponent in an AHL game.

Lagesson wrestled Adam Raska to the ice in the corner after the whistle. Lagesson stayed on top of Raska to choke him from behind, until Raska literally started tapping to be released.

It was a shocking scene to see Lagesson so dangerously attacking a player in such a way. Many fans criticized the referee as well, standing there allowing Raska to be choked out.

A three game suspension frankly feels light for such a brutal play by Lagesson. Nothing about it resembles a hockey play, and it has full intent to actually harm the opponent. Former NHL goalie Andrew Raycroft called for an extremely lengthy suspension.

Oilers fans may remember that a similar play happened to defenceman Evan Bouchard in the Stanley Cup Final last season.

Bouchard was grabbed by Panthers defenceman Aaron Ekblad and similarly choked out, forcing the Oiler to tap out to be released too.

Attacks like these are dangerous and have no place in the sport of hockey. It's not even part of fighting - it's just players that don't know how to act in a scrum after the whistle.

William Lagesson was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round of the 2014 draft, and the Swedish defenceman went on to play games for the Oilers in three seasons as a depth player.

Lagesson's now 28 years old, and with the Detroit Red Wings organization. He last played in the NHL for the Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs last year.

Hopefully players around the NHL take note of this dangerous attack by Lagesson, and the similar one by Aaron Ekblad, and try to get this garbage out of the game.
