Oilers starting goalie Stuart Skinner has been in a major rut as of late, but one analyst is warning that starting Calvin Pickard more may alienate Stuart Skinner.

Coach Knoblauch has called out Stuart Skinner now twice this month, and a quality performance from Cal Pickard last time out is leading to some questions of running with the hot hand.

Oilers analyst says Stuart Skinner may not respond well to missing game in rotation

According to a recent radio hit from Oilers analyst Allan Mitchell, starting Calvin Pickard in the next game would be singling out Stuart Skinner, who may not respond well to perceived doubt from the coaching staff.
You don't want to lose Skinner. I think they'll start Skinner tomorrow. They've always gone 2, 2, 1 with Skinner getting the 2. But we'll see how it goes. You can't lose Skinner. He's going to be one of your playoff guys.

- Allan Mitchell
Mitchell believes that starting Pickard over Skinner in their current rotation would «lose» the younger goalie, looking like a vote of no confidence that won't be well received.
The debate comes as Skinner's results have hit a clear rut, with a negative goals saved above expected in 4 of his last 6 games. Calvin Pickard on the other hand was brilliant against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Oilers should take this opportunity to give their backup goalie Pickard an extra start, and allow Skinner some time to collect himself and get ready for the next start. Their next two games are against rebuilding teams too, so quality of competition isn't a huge factor.
Playing Pickard tomorrow should not be a controversial decision. Resting Skinner for one extra game in the rotation shouldn't obliterate his confidence, and if it does, it may actually be a problem. Even last playoffs, Pickard played some games when Skinner faltered.
The Oilers should be comfortable with giving Skinner the reset, sending a message that he needs to be better, and moving on.
If the team is actually worried about affecting Skinner's confidence in a regular season game against the Anaheim Ducks, a goalie trade is more necessary than ever.
