The March 7th trade deadline is right around the corner, and GM Stan Bowman is exploring all his options to give his fighting chance in the postseason.
That said, Elliotte Friedman recently made an appearance on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, and the hockey pundit gave fans some insight as to what the team needs to be successful.
Although the Oilers snapped a 5 game losing streak with a big win over the Carolina Hurricanes, their extended skid exposed numerous aspects of their roster that needs upgrading.

According to Friedman, the Oilers are in the market to add a forward with some speed and some size to add some grit and tenacity to the lineup, including a defenceman to bolster their back-end.
"I think [the #Oilers] are looking for a forward with speed and size...a D too...it's dollar in, dollar out, but if they can create some cap room, we'll see what else can happen here."

Could the Canadiens be convinced to move on from Mike Matheson? I think he would be a dream fit on this Oilers team. He skates well, passes well, and is a much better defender than he usually gets credit for.
The Oilers don't need to target depth players to fix their problems. If they acquire one player who can comfortably be trusted with tough minutes, it bumps everyone down, making the whole lineup stronger. Targeting depth additions only would be very underwhelming for a Cup Contending team.
As stated by Friedman, it's a total dollar in, dollar out situation. With March 7th looming, it should be interesting to see what Stan Bowman has up his sleeve.
