It's well documented that the Oilers may have some trouble along their blue line after the team had traded Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks and chose not to match the offer sheet that was sent to former Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg. This has exposed some weaknesses in their pairings.
The talent level drops off dramatically after looking at the top four defensemen which include Josh brown, Ty Emberson and Troy Stecher. Stecher is the veteran of the group in question, but he has left many wondering if he can handle the minutes.
Stauffer name drops a couple of options including Cale Fleury and Jaycob Megna as possible options as the Oilers only have $830,000 in cap space available.
Fleury was drafted in 2017 by the Montreal Canadiens who then went on to play the last three years with the Seattle Kraken. Considered a shutdown defenseman, the 25-year-old who is a right-handed shot stands at six foot 1 and 212 lbs and carries a cap hit of $800,000. Adding him would be right in line with the money they have available and could give them the defensemen they need for this season.
Megna is a far heavier player as he is 31 years old, stands at 6 foot 6 and 220 lbs he holds a cap hit of $775,000. Originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks he had spent most of his career on the West Coast with the San Jose Sharks, ducks and the Kraken. He then moved east to the Chicago Blackhawks and now is currently with the Florida Panthers.
These low-cost players could certainly be options for the Oilers if they're looking for depth and players who could make an impact on the physical side and the shutdown role of the game. It remains to be seen if general manager Stan Bowman has any interest in these players but it's quite likely the Oilers will make a move or two prior to the season beginning.
