The Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid have put some pressure on the NHL to improve officiating, but one media member wants to go further by relieving Gary Bettman of his duties as commissioner.

The Oilers put out a statement and McDavid made comments to the media subtly hinting at dissatisfaction with the refs, and surely are engaging in more lobbying behind the scenes.

Oilers media suggests firing of Gary Bettman over Connor McDavid penalty problem and suspension

In response to the debate on added calls and protection for the NHL's star players, David Staples of the Edmonton Journal suggested the owners fire Gary Bettman before the next CBA negotiation.

My take? Fire Gary Bettman. He's had a solid run. But for the entire time he's run the NHL this has been an issue.

Star players get mauled with impunity. Is it not time for that to end? He's clearly not the leader to do it.

Connor McDavid was clear in his comments surrounding the incident that he only wishes the NHL calls the penalties in the rule book no matter the context.

»I think everybody as players - across the league, not just me, not just guys in this room - guys across the league want to see the game called. A penalty in the first is a penalty in the third, a penalty in October is a penalty in April. Guys want that standard, that consistency.»

- Connor McDavid

McDavid's comments, along with the Oilers organization statement on his suspension, both hint towards some real dissatisfaction from players toward the league on refereeing.

The current NHL collective bargaining agreement expires after the 2025-26 season, and discussions are reportedly beginning soon between the Players and League on a renewal.

Officiating will certainly be an issue that arises in discussions, and Staples believes this is a time for the owners to find new representation.

Gary Bettman has now been commissioner of the NHL for 32 years, and at the age of 72, retirement will soon be on the table anyway.

Perhaps now is the time to find a new commissioner for the league, one that can improve the relationship with the players and conditions of the game - most importantly, avoid a lockout.
