The injury took place last Thursday during the second period When McDavid's elbow contacted Johansson's jaw. He immediately dropped to the ice and was taken off to the dressing room where he hasn't been seen since. It was deemed a concussion, and he remains out for the foreseeable future.
There was no penalty called against McDavid as referee Chris Lee explained to both Wild head coach John Hynes and Joel Eriksson Ek that Johansson hit himself in the face with his own stick. This led to many Oilers fans feeling there was some embellishment on Johansson's part but now remains out of the lineup.
The Minnesota Wild have been plagued with an injury bug over the past several weeks which includes Wild star Kririll Kaprizov, Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin.
Adding Johansson into the mix certainly has depleted their lineup at a time when the team needs to try to rack up as many points as possible prior to the Four Nations face off.
Even though he did not receive any penalty for what had happened in Minnesota, McDavid his serving his three-game suspension that was handed down by the NHL department of player safety after the incredible scene on last Saturday's game against the Vancouver Canucks.
After being wrestled to the ground by Canucks forward Conor Garland, McDavid had enough and cross checked him in the side of the head which the NHL felt A3 game suspension was warranted.
The Edmonton fan base and many across the NHL did not agree with this sentence and it has been a hot button topic over the past week.
Saturday night will be an interesting game for the Oilers as they will have a rematch with the Canucks, and many will have all their eyes on Garland and what may happen to him as he was unscathed by any penalty whatsoever.
