The Edmonton Oilers are closing in on a contract extension with their 6th defenceman Ty Emberson, but a reporter has now also confirmed that he's not his listed height of 6'2.

Emberson has settled in nicely in n a third pair and penalty killing role, and now multiple reports are emerging of an imminent contract extension.

Oilers reporter Mark Spector spoke to Ty Emberson in a new interview for Sportsnet, and confirmed that both parties are in discussion to get a contract done - and Emberson would love to stay.

»The Oilers are trying to lock up the 24-year-old to a new contract.»

EMBERSON: «My agent mentioned something to me about that a couple days ago. If it happens to work out, I'd be excited. I love it here and hopefully can spend more time here.»

Interestingly, Spector also addressed a discrepancy many Oilers fans have noticed and discussed online: Emberson is listed by the Oilers as 6'2, but appears to be much shorter.

»I stood next to him, and he was in stocking feet. I'm five-eleven. He was not taller than me. How much does he weigh? He's small-ish, but sure, he could be 190.»

- Mark Spector

Ty Emberson still plays a tough game, even if he is shorter than his listed height. He's got into a few fights already this year, and is still able to break up cycles and clear the net front. As long as he has that ability, he'll keep his value on the penalty kill, and should stay in Edmonton.

Oilers Closing in on Contract for Defenceman Ty Emberson

Oilers insider Jim Matheson recently shared that Edmonton would like to be able to lock up Emberson for 3 years, likely under $2M in annual salary.

For a 24 year old defenceman who's looked like a promising defender in his 65 career NHL games, that would be a smart bet contract to get Emberson to. It could be a great value deal for Edmonton right away.

Emberson plays a mature defensive game and is able to make a decent first pass. With some more coaching he'll only get better, but if they wait too long, even a good playoff performance could drive up his asking price.

Hopefully the Oilers can get Emberson locked up to a contract in the next few weeks, and add some clarity to their blueline for the next few seasons.
