It's the agent's role obviously to field offers from teams including offer sheets, but Broberg's agent did more than that - and he's got a negative reputation among hockey fans. According to Andy Strickland on the Cam and Strick Podcast, Broberg's agent Darren Ferris brought Dylan Holloway's agent into the fold, knowing that the Blues would find the situation more favourable if they knew the Oilers were less likely to match the deals.
Darren Ferris is an agent that hockey fans will know well from Mitch Marner's prolific negotiations with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ferris often engaged in outwardly hostile negotiation tactics through the media, and dragged the Leafs to overpay Marner by threatening multiple offer sheets. Plenty of fans saw that Ferris was behind the offer sheet and weren't surprised, but to hear that he also looped in Dylan Holloway is a tough blow.
Considering his trade request earlier this season, it's clear that Broberg was looking to move on from Edmonton to find more ice time elsewhere. His prolific agent was able to pull off an unprecedented move to use Dylan Holloway as a pawn so the Oilers would be in a more vulnerable position and lose both players. At least the Oilers will take the draft pick compensation, and target a top four defenceman in trade at the deadline.
