The Blues have announced this morning that Broberg is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks with an injury to his right leg.
Broberg thankfully avoided the worst case scenario, although missing over a month is still a significant amount of time. Broberg's right leg was crushed by Leafs forward Mitch Marner falling on top of him, and one sports Doctor believed there may have been structural damage that could've held Broberg out for months.
In his first season with the St. Louis Blues after signing an offer sheet in the offseason, Broberg was asked to immediately step into the role of a top four defenceman, and he's surpassed expectations. Broberg had been regularly playing over 20 minutes a night, playing on their first powerplay unit, and excelling with the opportunity. In 12 games so far this year, Broberg has 2 goals and 9 points.
Oilers fans certainly know well the success of Broberg this year, as the case grows that letting him go may have been a mistake. Edmonton was backed into a tough corner with the offer sheet, but losing an emerging star defenceman may turn out to sting for years. Simply put, 6'4 right shot defenceman that can skate like Broberg are premium assets in the NHL.
It's tough that Broberg never got this opportunity in Edmonton, but Oilers fans can still root for his development as a player. Hopefully Broberg is able to make a quick recovery, and get back to his breakout season.
