The Canadian 4 Nations Faceoff roster was released yesterday, and three prominent Oilers including Zach Hyman were cut.
At practice today, Oilers reporter Mark Spector asked Hyman if he thinks he'll still be selected for Canada in event of an injury. Hyman shot down that idea hard, insisting he's happy to cheer for the players on the roster.
It's an absurd proposition from Spector that Hyman may be hoping for another player to be injured and miss an amazing opportunity so he could take it instead.
It's obviously a difficult aspect for Hyman to miss out on the Team Canada nomination, considering that he was probably taken off the roster due to his slow start this year. In 20 games this year, Hyman's only scored three goals - far off pace from scoring 54 last year.
However difficult it may be to reconcile losing out on the opportunity to represent Canada, Hyman does have to remain ready. Canada GM Don Sweeney said yesterday that some players who were final cuts should stay ready in case of injury.
Hyman has the right attitude of persevering through his slump, and focusing his best efforts on the Edmonton Oilers. A few weeks ago when it was clear Hyman could be cut, he opened up about the difficult feelings of missing out on Team Canada.
Hyman has been an absolute workhorse in his 4 seasons since joining the Edmonton Oilers, and the fans will stick by him through this difficult stretch.
He'll get back to success of banging in greasy goals at the net front soon enough - it's only a matter of time while playing with Connor McDavid.
