Midway through the first period they the the score tied, 18 year old Nate Corbet of the Oilers and 21 year old Joesph Arntsen of the Canucks squared off for real old-school fight. Near center ice, the two dropped their gloves and through repeated haymakers at each other for quite some time.
Both players landed hard punches against each other but neither player would relent. Corbet popped off Arntsen's helmet early on, but Arntsen may have connected with the hardest punches. After the two players got tied up closer to another, the referees stepped in to break it up. Arntsen had a major age advantage and has played 268 career junior games, so Corbet held in pretty well for a player with only 58 games played.
The Oilers went on to lose the first rookie game of the year 2-0 to the Canucks. Oilers goalie Nathaniel Day made 28 saves and the game was close and competitive, but none of the Oilers forwards prospects were able to bury a goal. Condors head coach Colin Chaulk is coaching the rookies, and he hilariously just said it's a rookie tournament' when asked about the result of the game.
Hopefully the rookies can take a lesson from this game and apply it to their next game tonight against the Calgary Flames at 8:30 MT. The Young Stars Classic will wrap up with a final game against the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, then the real Oilers training camp is set to begin.
