In a trade that appears to heavily favor the Edmonton Oilers, the team announced the acquisition of Jayden Grubbe from the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick. The 20-year-old forward, standing at an imposing 6'6" (on skates), captained the Red Deer Rebels and was previously drafted in the third round.

This deal is considered a steal for Oilers GM Ken Holland, who managed to secure a promising prospect in exchange for a mere fifth-round pick.

Despite not reaching elite production in the junior level, Grubbe's size and potential have caught the attention of Edmonton. Although he recorded 14 goals and 35 points in 68 games during the 2021-22 season and improved to 18 goals and 67 points in 64 games this year, it seems the Rangers were not interested in extending him an offer.

With this trade, Grubbe will have the opportunity to sign closer to his Alberta home and kick-start his professional career within the Oilers' minor league system. Standing at an impressive 6'3", he possesses potential but still has a long way to go before making an impact at the NHL level. The fact that the Rangers managed to secure a fifth-round pick for him is commendable, considering the alternative of potentially losing him without any return.
