As the Oilers organization begins to sift through this season with the playoff run they did have, management will need to make decisions on who will stay and who will go. They'll also keep an eye out for any potential players that could come up either through unrestricted free agency or the buyout market.

One such player, Ryan Suter one of the most well-known and steady defensemen in the NHL may be on the verge of a buyout from the Dallas Stars.

The 38-year-old defenceman has had a sharp decline in his numbers as he ages which is completely normal for any NHL player. And it would be advantageous for the Stars to move on from his contract as according to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts podcast, it seems that the buyout costs for the Stars would not be significant and would be helpful for their organization.

The only way this could work for the Oilers is if they could catch him on a good deal below $1,000,000 per season. I feel that a one-year deal also would be appropriate as it doesn't seem his numbers will rebound. Having a defenseman with that much experience would be invaluable for this young defence core that needs this kind of player right now.

It remains to be seen if Suter would be even on their radar as general manager Ken Holland begins his job to realign this team for the next season.
