Now that NHL training camps have been ongoing for the past few days, head coaches and their staff have begun the process of selecting players who will be returning to their junior teams or their AHL affiliates.

It came as no surprise to the Edmonton Oilers that they reassigned the rising prospect, Beau Akey, back to the Barrie Colts in the OHL.

During his brief time with the Oilers, Akey certainly turned heads with his impressive skills and overall performance at the NHL level. The 18-year-old did not display any signs of nervousness or fear while playing at such a high level, which bodes well for his future when he's ready to make the jump to the National Hockey League.

Akey was selected in the 2023 entry draft in the second round, 56th overall. Standing at six feet tall and weighing 173 pounds, this right-handed shot defenseman played 66 games with the Colts last year. During that time, he scored eleven goals with 36 assists, accumulating 47 points and 39 penalty minutes.

He is undoubtedly a promising prospect for the Oilers, and it is widely expected that he will crack the lineup within the next few years, especially as the Oilers prepare for an infusion of new talent, particularly on their blue line.
