Bo Horvat was believed to be the top prize in this year's NHL Trade Deadline Day, but the New York Islanders threw a wrench in those plans making a huge trade for the Canucks captain to help make a playoff push.
However, Horvat might not of known what he got himself into heading to the Islanders. As General Manager Lou Lamoriello has been criticized for the rules he makes his players follow no excuses or exceptions.
Lamoriello is as straight up old-school as it comes and to play on his team, Islander players have some strict rules they must follow, Sportsnet's Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman discussed this today on his 32 Thoughts Podcast.
"Lou Lamoriello is notorious for for not calling until 12:01 Eastern on Free Agency Day. He is old school. He does not break the rules. And that is why this guy (Elliotte's source) said to me was you might have to wait for some clarity if the Islanders are indeed part of this."
Friedman would list some of Lou's Rules:
No facial hair except during the playoffs.
No long hair past the collar.
No jewelry necklaces or earrings.
Jackets and ties must be worn to games and on team bus and plane.
No broadcasters and media permitted on team charter including team's broadcasters.
- Elliotte Friedman
TSN's Hockey Gord Miller would share more:
Players, unless they're veterans or young players just coming up for a few games, aren't typically allowed to wear high numbers. The idea there is that the numbers on the back of jerseys need to be close together for unity. A high number like number 70 is just too much individuality. Two exceptions are Casey Cizikas with #53 pre dates Lou Lamoriello as the Islanders Gm, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau with #44 he was allowed to keep his number from the Ottawa Senators trade.
Upon his arrival in New York, Horvat was forced take upon a new number to fit under Lou's Rules.
- Gord Miller Wow I knew Lou had some rules but damn he's hardcore. Horvat has worn number 53 his whole career including his Junior hockey for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, you wonder if he's really going to like not being able to wear the number he's use to.
