According to the post from Hockey 24/7, the Leafs ownership are holding a meeting today with Brendan Shanahan and Brad Treliving to discuss a potential coaching change.
This comes as the Leafs have largely been an underwhelming team this year. With a record of 21-12-8 they've still managed to be in a playoff spot, but win very infrequently in regulation and have often been sunk to bad defence, bad goaltending, and blown leads. For a team that's just signed their core players to massive contracts, the Leafs need to be competing for the Stanley Cup, not be a potential wild card team.
If the Leafs were to make the decision to fire Sheldon Keefe, ownership would need to make the call as he's still under contract for two more seasons. If the Leafs were to make the coaching change now, there's a slew of fantastic candidates available including Craig Berube, Dean Evason, and even Jay Woodcroft.
Again, this is just a rumour circulating, but reading the situation the Leafs are in as well as the viable replacements for Keefe - it's entirely possible that this move is being considered.
