During most negotiations with NHL players, they'll have a representative or agent looking after their best interests. However, some players decide to represent themselves since they are the best at knowing what they can contribute and what they want financially.
This was the case for the Edmonton Oilers when they were negotiating with 36-year-old Derek Ryan. The organization announced today that Ryan locked in a two-year $1.8 million contract. His annual cap hit will be $900,000 AAV.
The deal also showed that he did not have trade protection included. Ryan played eighty games this season, scoring 13 goals with 7 assists for 20 points. He will continue to help the Oilers in the bottom 6 with penalty killing and a shutdown role.
It seemed likely that Ryan would stick with the Oilers as they have been knocking on the door in the playoffs to break through past the conference final. We'll have to see what general manager Ken Holland has in store as the draft continues to approach at a rapid pace.
