Imagine taking your son or daughter to hockey and you witness them being intentionally injured, not by a player on the opposing team, but by one of the referees. That was the case during a minor hockey league game in Russia when a referee by the name of Alexander Cherenkov was seen intentionally tripping a 17 year-old player.

The incident occurred as players were involved in a scrum during the 3rd period, as the referee attempted to cool things down by separating players. Cherenkov would lose his patience, puting his leg behind the players legs in order to take him down.

The teenage player would lose his helmet and hit his head on the ice, which ended up causing him a concussion. Cherenkov has since been suspended by the League for the remainder of the 2023 season.

This punishment wasn't clearly enough as the referee's job is to maintain order not injury players. Personally I think Cherenkov should face some criminal punishment as well as permanent ban from ever officiating again.
